Thanksgiving a time of reflection

Similar to the August Moon Festival in China,
Thanksgiving in an important holiday in Canada.
Celebrated annually since 1879 when
parliament passed a law designating a national day of thanksgiving, since 1957
it has been held on a fixed date. At that time, then-governor general Vincent
Massey proclaimed “A day of general Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the
bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed is to observed on the second
Monday in October.” This year, that date is Oct. 9.
Food and football make an odd, but true,
traditional Thanksgiving pairing.
During the long weekend, families and friends
traditionally gather for a feast that centres around turkey served with stuffing,
mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, sweet corn, and
various autumn vegetables such as Brussel sprouts. Pumpkin pie typically
completes the meal.
A popular alternative is baked ham and apple
pie.
The Canadian Football League traditionally
holds a Thanksgiving Day game, the Thanksgiving Day Classic. It is one of two
weeks in which the league plays on Monday afternoons, the other being the
Labour Day Classic. This year’s feature game will see the Montreal Alouettes
host the Edmonton Eskimos.
